# Phone number validator & formatter

> Check whether phone numbers are valid and convert them to E.164, international and national format, with country and number type. Free, in your browser.

Canonical: https://mobilevalidate.com/tools/phone-number-validator · Last updated: 2026-11-07

Paste one phone number or up to 500, one per line, and pick a default country for numbers written without a country code. Each row shows whether the number is valid, its E.164 form (+ country code and digits, the format APIs expect), the international and national formats, the country and the number type. It runs in your browser and you can copy or download the result as CSV.

Use the tool: https://mobilevalidate.com/tools/phone-number-validator (interactive; needs a browser with JavaScript).

**Privacy:** Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type, paste or upload is sent to MobileValidate or anyone else, and nothing is stored. The page counts one anonymous "tool used" event per visit (no numbers, no text), and sends nothing at all when your browser asks not to be tracked.

## How it works

Each line is parsed with libphonenumber, the open-source numbering-plan database maintained by Google and used by most phone apps. Numbers that start with + or 00 are read as international; anything else uses the default country you picked, so 020 7946 0958 with United Kingdom becomes +442079460958.

A number is valid when its length and leading digits match a range the country actually assigns. "Right length, but not in a range the country uses" usually means a typo or a made-up number; "wrong length" usually means a missing or extra digit.

The number type (mobile, fixed line, VoIP, toll-free and so on) comes from the numbering plan, not from the live network. Some countries, such as the United States and Mexico, use the same ranges for mobile and fixed lines, so the type there is "fixed line or mobile". Ported numbers keep their original range, so the type stays the same after a move between networks.

Nothing is sent anywhere: copy the table, or download it as a CSV file with one row per input line.

## Valid is not the same as live

A valid number can be switched off, ported to another network or not on WhatsApp. Check whether these numbers are live, which network they are on, or whether they are on WhatsApp.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is E.164 format?

E.164 is the international standard for writing phone numbers: a + sign, the country code, then the national number without the leading 0 or spaces, at most 15 digits. +44 20 7946 0958 in E.164 is +442079460958. Most APIs, CRMs and messaging platforms expect it. See the [E.164 guide](https://mobilevalidate.com/blog/e164-phone-number-format-guide-for-developers).

### Does "valid" mean the number is in use?

No. Valid means the number fits a range the country assigns. It can still be unassigned, switched off, disconnected or recycled to someone else. To know whether it is live on the network today, run an [HLR lookup](https://mobilevalidate.com/services/hlr-lookup); to know the current network, a [carrier lookup](https://mobilevalidate.com/services/carrier-lookup).

### How do you know if a number is mobile or landline?

From the numbering plan: countries assign separate ranges to mobile, fixed, VoIP, toll-free and premium-rate numbers. This works for most countries, but not where mobile and fixed share ranges (for example the United States, Canada and Mexico), and not for numbers that moved to a different kind of service. A live [carrier lookup](https://mobilevalidate.com/services/carrier-lookup) returns the line type the network reports.

### Why is my number marked invalid?

The most common causes are a missing country code (pick a default country or add + and the code), an extra or missing digit, a leftover trunk 0 after the country code (+44 0 20… should be +44 20…), or an old format such as Mexico's +52 1 mobile prefix, which was dropped in 2019.

### How many numbers can I check at once?

Up to 500 lines per run here. For longer lists use the free [phone list cleaner](https://mobilevalidate.com/tools/phone-list-cleaner), which takes up to 50,000 rows from a CSV file and removes duplicates.

### Is my data sent to a server?

No. The tool runs in your browser with the numbering data loaded with the page. Nothing you paste is sent or stored.

### Why does a number show "not supported"?

Numbers from sanctioned countries and regions are not supported on MobileValidate, so the tool shows them as not supported without details.
